(Image: "Control" by Kenny Cole - 30" x 22" Gouache on Paper 2012) (Unity, ME) The show inaugurates the new location of the Leonard Craig Gallery with new work by visual artist Kenny Cole. The exhibit features gouache, watercolor and ink drawings on paper and a 16 foot high wall drawing installed in the lobby of the Unity College Centre for the Performing Arts facility. There will be an opening reception for the artist and re-dedication of the Gallery on Friday, September 21st from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The show's title, “Even Now the Reaper Draws His Wages”, is quoted from the bible and originally refers to the wages being drawn as the fruit of eternal life with God as the reaper. Yet visual artist Kenny Cole's work spins off in a completely different direction, re-interpreting the quote to apply to the new and expanding robotic warfare industry which is currently enjoying a huge economic windfall. Cole has explored issues of war and weaponry through various installations, paintings, drawings and prints, beginning with his 2006 “Prison Papers”, a series of drawings on found prison record forms; with his depiction of weaponry from the world's arsenal of missiles and bombs; and continuing in 2010 with his “Hellfire Story”, an installation which chronicled the development and deployment of the Hellfire Missile System, currently deployed for use with Reaper and Predator Drones. Portland critic Nicholas Schroeder writes of Kenny's art: “for…work so unapologetically political, so dedicated to finding new ways of revealing dark secrets, there sure are a lot of pretty colors.” The Leonard Craig Gallery is located at the Unity College Centre for the Performing Arts, 42 Depot Street in Unity. The Gallery will be open during events and programming. For more information, please call 207-948-SHOW or visit uccpa.unity.edu. |
