(Image: "Condi" by Marc Leavitt) (Belfast, ME) The public is invited to the opening of Pop Objects, starring Dick, Condi & Friends, at Marc Leavitt Art Studio, located at 153 High Street (upstairs) in Belfast. The exhibit is on view from Friday, July 13th through July 22nd, with an opening reception from 5:30 to 8:00 pm on July 13th as part of the Friday Night Art Walk. This 10-day exhibition will feature Leavitt's complete Bandage Flags series and introduce So? (Dick Cheney) and other paintings and collages not previously exhibited. Jill Medvedow, former Director of Boston's ICA, helped a client select Marc Leavitt’s first Pop Objects—Flag painting (see Architectural Digest, November 2006). Riffing on Jasper Johns’s Flag on Orange Field, this painting includes a formal structure of under-layered painted photographs of "gun-totin' bikini-clad babes" and their weaponry to realize a 20th century vision of America. So? (Dick Cheney), reflects on a new American "underbelly" of a Johns surface. The rectangle as subjective language is utilized to present disgraced political figures, Abu Ghraib torture victims, Katrina hostages, and make-believe religious power brokers involved in George W. Bush's tenure as a "leader." As the November 2012 presidential election approaches, Marc Leavitt wanted to look back to help him decide how to look forward. Galerie Swanstrom recently featured Marc Leavitt’s paintings at New York’s Affordable Art Fair in April 2012. Juried shows with the Cambridge Art Association in Massachusetts include artworks distinguished by Directors' Choice Prize, Honorable Mention Prize, and National Prize Show recognitions. The artist is honored to have participated in over 15 solo or group exhibitions over the past decade.
