ARTIST STATEMENT: I had not done serious art in a very long time and I wanted to explore the relationship of heavy drawing paper with a simple charcoal stick, a jar of carbon powder, various types of erasers and sand paper. The human figure is a timeless subject that has been used to explore techniques and mediums by artists for hundreds of years. Most of the images of back torsos are intentionally devoid of the human personality traits that you get with frontal views and force the viewer to concentrate on the muscles, skin and lighting. What you see in these 10 drawings is an exploration of pushing and pulling the balance between black carbon pigment and paper by random scratching, erasing and massaging sometimes at the expense of ripping the surface of the paper resulting in an interesting and unique set of drawings.
