ARTIST STATEMENT

Lisa B. Martin is an artist whose primary medium is fine-art photography. She has resided in Maine since 1982, and currently lives in a renovated farmhouse in the countryside with her husband and daughter. Lisa has been an adjunct faculty member at Unity College since 2005. She received her M.F.A. in Visual Art in 2009. Her work has been described as following in the traditions of Surrealism; its magic is produced in broad daylight, making manifest our dreams in the tradition shared by image-makers and writers as diverse as Francesca Woodman, David Lynch and Stephen King. She offers these images to the viewer as an opportunity to see quotidian moments as an occasion for assessment, possibility and wonder. With the exception of Blurring Boundaries, all of the images were made using a large-format camera and traditional films.

ABOUT "PANORAMA" GROUPING

Still
beneath the garden
incubating essential language,
while old texts wreak havoc with our senses . . .

Collectively, these narratives both influence and limit our perceptions, for they position us as distinctly divided subjects within this process we call life.

Are we ready to become panoramic?

ABOUT "BLURRING BOUNDARIES" GROUPING

“For although we are accustomed to separate nature and human perception into two realms, they are, in fact, indivisible.”
- Simon Schama

My aim with this series is to present to the viewer an opportunity to meditate on the perceived perceptual boundaries between the domicile (the interior, the place where one resides both literally and figuratively - a controlled environment) and the wild (the exterior, the place where there is no controlling or taming nature as is clearly evidenced in natural cycles, or the undeveloped, uncultivated landscape). For me, this series reflects those moments when the boundary is diminished.

As for the process, these images were made using a 35mm SLR camera in combination with color negative film. Each image is a single exposure, and they should be considered as documents not fabrications.

Maine Art Scene’s individual artist press release deal is absolutely the best I’ve ever heard of! Since you posted notice of "The Book of Forms" yesterday on your web site and on your Facebook page (which I linked to mine) I’ve heard from more than a dozen people about it, and not all of them are from Maine, either.

Thanks for the existence of Maine Art Scene.

I just wanted to show and share appreciation to the 'Maine Art Scene', especially for its 'Virtual gallery'. An image from one of my paintings is on the cover of The Scene magazine this month thanks to the selection being made by the editor of the magazine after looking through the virtual online art gallery. Thanks to Maine art Scene for all it's creative work.

This is a beautiful magazine, I had no idea. Where have I been? The way messages float to one side is neat. Congratulations on an amazing contribution.
