(Little Cranberry Island, ME) Painting for Henry Isaacs and Ashley Bryan is a way of life. Neither artist misses a day of making art, of responding to the environment in which they live. These two have been friends and neighbors for years on Little Cranberry Island in Down East Maine.

Painting on an Island: Exploring Plein Air 2011 will have two sessions:
Session 1: Thursday afternoon, September 1 through Sunday afternoon, September 4, 2011
Session 2: Monday afternoon, September 5 through Thursday afternoon, September 8, 2011

Veteran and beginner painters find new ways of working and responding to the unique setting of the Cranberry Islands and the village of Islesford, Maine. They will find Ashley’s and Henry’s presentation of “visual thinking” both familiar and accessible. Painters who attended in 2009 and 2010 agreed that Ashley and Henry go way beyond teaching art as they quickly create a community of artists in their three-day workshops.

Certainly demonstrations are presented, and projects suggested. However, it may be that it's the discussions and quiet conversations that occur between teachers and participants, as well as artist-to-artist that are the most valuable. Past participants have referred to these sessions as “mini art residencies.” Each individual's strengths are celebrated and struggles are worked through and shared.

Support and encouragement are the cornerstones of the workshop days. The faculty bring decades of art college experience to this unusual venue and provide extraordinary feedback, direction, and irresistible challenge to all attending. If you've started a picture that you can't quite put away at the end of the day, the coffee is on and studio space open through the night.

Painting is punctuated by three meals a day at the Islesford Dock. Concentration on visual art is shifted to culinary art, as every meal is an extraordinary event of good conversation and tastes. Lobsters and Crab from the local fishing co-op? Of course. But that's just the beginning.

Quiet accommodations are provided in local cottages near ocean views. Frequent boat service is available to the Mount Desert Island ports of Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor. There are few cars but all is walking distance on this island of two and a half square miles. For participants who have mobility issues, there are golf carts and drivers to assist. The staff’s effort is focused on doing everything to allow you to immerse yourself in your art for the time you are with us. Over the three sessions that Henry, Ashley and the “Dock” have presented, the most difficult moment has been the ending. Over half of our artists are repeat participants. Space is limited, so please register soon.

The plein air workshops are presented by the Islesford Dock Gallery on Little Cranberry Island in Islesford, Maine. For more information and registration, please phone 207-244-7494 or send an email to islesforddock@gmail.com.

This is a beautiful magazine, I had no idea. Where have I been? The way messages float to one side is neat. Congratulations on an amazing contribution.
