(Islesford, ME) Don't miss the September plein air workshops of paint, conversation, and splendid food. There are still a few places left, however not many! You see, Henry Isaacs and Ashley Bryan are in their third year of presenting these remarkable three-day workshops. Cynthia and Dan Lief of the Islesford Dock Gallery and Restaurant are the hosts. All of this amounts to the fact that many spaces are reserved by returning participants. Why? Little Cranberry Island is an extraordinary island off the Downeast coast near Acadia National Park. There are stunning landscapes at every turn. This year round community of under one hundred year round residents boasts an active fishing fleet, a museum, a post office and small store, and two art galleries. Accommodations for painters are found mostly in cottages, either on or just a short walk from the water. The Islesford Dock Gallery turns itself into studios available for indoor work at any time, day or night.
The food? The Islesford Dock Restaurant has the most innovative menu and talented chefs of the area. Participants eat three meals a day. A glass of excellent wine at evening critiques. However the chief ingredient in the success of the workshops are Ashley Bryan and Henry Isaacs’ experience in building a three-day conversation about art. Certainly there are demonstrations, and guidance for those desiring such, but it is Ashley and Henry’s encouragement of participants to find their own voices in paint, as well as in discussion with fellow painters, that makes this experience unique. Often referred to as “mini-residencies,” beginners and experienced painters are brought together at the Islesford Dock Plein Air Workshops. “The Dock” is often told that these shared experiences are remembered and built upon. Conversations started on the three square mile island are echoed throughout the year by Islesford’s alumni.
