(Belfast, and Montville, ME) Waterfall Arts has scheduled a full range of summer art classes for adults, teens and children at their Belfast and Montville locations. There is space available in all classes and partial scholarships are available for those in need. Belfast classes begin the week of July 9th with Digital Photography for 8 to 12 year olds with Eleni Murphy and Drawing Comics and Flip Books with Bill Davis for the same age group. In the photography class students will learn to use their cameras, hear about important photographers and create a website to document their work. Long time illustrator and animator Bill Davis will lead a fun filled week of drawing and animation with instruction in basic animation skills and exercises using flipbooks and a simple animation setup. April Dove brings a light hearted introduction to Yoga and Art for 6 to 9 year olds and Belfast artist Harold Garde will teach his Strappo painting technique to adults that same week. Week long classes in Fiber Fantasy with Sandy Cirillo for ages 8 through 12 and Digital Animation with Bill Davis for ages 8 through 14 begin July 16th. In Cirillo’s class, students will work on projects using man made and natural fiber materials. Davis’s class in animation will meet at the Hutchinson Center Computer Lab. Kris Engman begins Drawing Downtown Belfast, which will meet once a week on Wednesday evenings for five weeks, starting July 18th. Engman says that this class for adults and those age 15 and up, “will give a new perspective on Belfast -linear perspective, that is. After an initial classroom introduction to basic concepts of creating depth and distance on a flat page, we’ll meet each week in a new location to test and perfect our understandings of perspective. Belfast has many beautiful architectural features and during the five weeks, we’ll work from the panoramic to the close-up, developing each page to completion by establishing strong compositional relationships with engaging mark making.” Karola Bryant will lead an energetic two hour workshop in tie dye, batik, and origami on Saturday, July 21st for all ages and families. She’ll show how to use these techniques to make designs reminiscent of the fractal aspects we see in nature, from the heavens to the molecular level. Bryant says “In this workshop, we'll make something beautiful!”

She says that this class “integrates the performing arts and the visual arts while having loads of fun!” Also that week Russell Kahn will lead a multimedia class for 8 to 12 year olds in Exploring the 4 Ps - Paint, Pencil, Pastel, Print. Beginning the same week at Waterfall Arts’ Montville location at Kingdom Falls, Nancy Glassman will inspire children age 6 to 9 with This Special Place; exploring the woodlands and streams inside and out, and making art that imagines what this place is all about from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. In the afternoons at Kingdom Falls, Glassman will teach watercolor painting to adults and those ages 15 and up. Glass classes begin July 30th with a week long intro class in Torchwork and Beadwork with Deb Gay for adults and those ages 12 up. Marta Bernbaum returns to the Kingdom beginning Monday, August 6th to teach Advanced Beads and Sculpture. April Dove will offer Yoga and Art for 6 to 9 year olds at Kingdom Falls August 6th through 9th and Russell Kahn will work with ages 8 through 12 in an afternoon class there on Hand building Objects – 3D Art using clay, paper-mache and found objects beginning July 30th.
(Image: Karola Bryant's Animal Parade) Belfast classes beginning July 30th include the colorful Animal Parade with Karola Bryant for 6 to 9 year olds, where children do hands-on learning about animal life and make animals come to life through their own creations. Well known drummer Jeff Densmore will conduct Rock Band 101 for aspiring musicians age 13 and up beginning Monday, August 6th. Belfast jeweler Lauren Veale offers an unusual workshop in Cuttlefish Cast Jewelry on Saturday and Sunday August 4th and 5th where she’ll teach a small scale casting technique using cuttlefish skeletons. Veale says “The method uses little equipment at low cost and provides immediate results. Using the backbone of a cuttlefish as a mold, students will carve into the soft bone to create the form and design desired. Silver is then melted and poured into the mold. Castings take on the shape of the mold with the addition of a unique texture. Students will learn how to transform their casting into a piece of jewelry along with basic methods of cleaning and finishing. Each student will leave with at least one small finished object or piece of jewelry.” Waterfall Arts, now in its 13th year, is located at 256 High Street in Belfast and at Kingdom Falls, 52 Kingdom Road Montville. Early sign-up for classes is encouraged, as classes may fill quickly. For class details, times and fees, to register, request a scholarship application, to volunteer or to be added to the mailing list, please call Waterfall Arts at 207 338-2222 or visit www.waterfallarts.org. |
