(Image: Paul K. Chappell by Robert Shetterly) (Belfast, ME) An exhibit centering on the effects of war and the practice of peace activism by well known Maine artists, Rob Shetterly and Alan Magee, opens at Waterfall Arts on Friday, September 7 with a reception from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Shetterly’s portraits of veterans, government workers, whistle-blowers, activists and students who have spoken out against war are from his series, Americans Who Tell the Truth. Each portrait includes a quote such as this one by Samantha Smith, a young peace activist from Maine: “If we could be friends by just getting to know each other better, then what Magee’s drawings, monotypes, collages, tapestries and sculpture reflect the corporal impact of war as well as the underlying intentions of those who seek to profit from the conflicts. The work is mysterious, insightful and moving.
(Image: "Postscript" by Alan Magee) While both Magee and Shetterly have shown their work throughout Maine and the US, this is the first time the AWTT portrait series and Magee’s images will be shown together, offering different modes of expression on the subject of conflict. During the exhibit, the artists will speak publicly together for the first time, and lead a public discussion on ways to tell the truth through art. Other activities include workshops, a Bring Our War Dollars Home Draw-a-thon with Kenny Cole, collaborative and interactive performances and a talk by Paul K. Chappell, Iraq War veteran and peace activist, who is the subject of one of Shetterly’s portraits. In the Corridor Gallery, Harlan Crichton, recent graduate of the Maine College of Art, will show a selection from In the Shadow of the Burning Dog: a photographic series of recent Maine veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Radio station WERU 89.9 is the media sponsor for the The War on Peace exhibit which will be up through Wednesday, November 21st at Waterfall Arts, located at 256 High Street in Belfast. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, during all related events and by appointment. Please call 207-338-2222 or visit waterfallarts.org for more information about classes, rentals, exhibits and volunteering or to arrange a visit outside regular hours. |
