Various Dates and Locations, Starting July 21st(Kennebunk, ME) Join Massachusetts painter and instructor Emily Passman for a series of three classes, designed for beginners through experienced painters in scenic Kennebunkport and Peaks Island. (Image: Painting by Emily Passman)
Passman says, "Lately I see my paintings entering a new stage. I can more easily eliminate the representational image, while still requiring it as my reference, and core of my inspiration: the tension evoked by shape against shape, color against color, light against dark, and relationships of sizes to one another. Each stroke and decision is a response to a previous one. In the painting process I am reacting-to rather than depicting"- Emily Passman The Course Schedule: Alla Prima Workshop: Sunday, July 22nd from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (includes short lunch break). Fee is $75 Painting Alla Prima is a "wet-in-wet" oil painting technique that is immediate and painterly. It literally translates to "at one time" and the goal is to finish a painting in one session. Loose and expressionistic brushwork defines this painting style and is as popular today as in the past. The class is perfect for the serious beginner as well as the experienced painter. We will cover color, values, composition and lively Alla Prima Brush Technique. Work mostly plein air as weather permits. Demonstrations and end of day class critique will be included. (Note: Students whosign up for both workshops will pay $115, a savings of $15) Peaks Island en Plein Air: Saturday, September 22nd from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (includes short lunch break). Fee is $75, plus cost of ferry to the island (not included). Join Emily Passman to paint one of the most scenic islands in Casco Bay. Students will meet on Peaks Island at 10:00 am at the ferry landing before heading off to picturesque locations to sketch and paint ocean, harbor and/or village scenes. Participants are encouraged to bring a French easel and all art supplies needed—you will be walking with your supplies to painting locations. French easels are available to rent in advance for $15. We strongly suggest that you make accommodations for the 9:30 am Casco Bay Ferry leaving from Portland’s Old Port (to view ferry costs, parking and schedules, please click here). This class focuses on loosening up, using an expressionistic approach as opposed to one of realism. Students may work in oil or acrylic. This is not a painting techniques class to learn to use a certain medium, so please be prepared to work in a medium in which you are comfortable. Rather, the group will focus more on the creation of exciting paintings that express the essence of place instead of depicting! Emily's style is loose and expressive without losing a sense of realism. Be ready with large brushes, a large canvas (at least 16 x 20 - though larger is highly recommended!), and willingness to set free, letting go of the old and tight, realistic approach!
