On Display Through April 23, 2010.

(Belfast, ME) The fourth annual Branching Out Mentoring Project will be on exhibit in the Clifford Gallery at Waterfall Arts in Belfast. Young artists and their artist mentors worked together using photography, video, clay, painting, drawing, sculpture and fiber arts to create work on this year’s theme, “Taking Wing”. The mentors work with the young artists in their chosen discipline, providing some direction, collaboration, technical expertise and advice and encouragement.

This year’s young artist-mentor pairs are Seth Whited and Emma Bonneville, Kenny Cole and Lizzie Cox, Josh Povec and Emma Hamm, Katie Wadsworth and Chelsea Porter, Dan Clarke and Hila Shooter, Chuck Hamm and Rachael Kahn, Karen Jelenfy and Katie Wollfrum and Russell Kahn and Tom Young. Each pair came up with different interpretations of the theme.

Some focused on birds in flight, fabricating nests and illustrating avian predators, while other pairs were out at dawn shooting Belfast harbor and the horizon in 360 degrees. The resulting exhibit, on display through April 23rd, promises to be fresh and exciting.

Waterfall Arts’ Branching Out program is supported by a grant from the Davis Family Foundation. The program continues to inspire willingness in both the mentors and young artists to dedicate many hours to their investigations of the theme, creating pieces which bring the idea to life. A reception for all the artists, their families and friends will be held on Friday March 5th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. The Clifford Gallery is located at Waterfall Arts in Belfast, 256 High Street. Gallery hours are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesday through Friday, Tuesday evenings until 7:00 pm and by appointment. For more information, please call 338-2222 or visit www.waterfallarts.org.
