Event Will Benefit the Camden Windjammer Festival

(Camden, ME) Would you like to wrap up your summer by purchasing some beautiful, original artwork by award-winning artists Paul Garnett, Guy Corriero, or one of many other talented plein air painters, while benefitting a non-profit community event at the same time? Camden Falls Gallery invites you to join them on Sunday, September 2nd at 1:30 pm for a Plein Air Wet Paint Auction to benefit the Camden Windjammer Festival.

The gallery's First Annual Plein Air Wet Paint Auction takes place on Labor Day weekend and coincides with the Camden Windjammer Festival, which draws thousands of visitors each year. During the festival, the fleet gathers in picturesque Camden Harbor for festivities reminiscent of the days when hundreds of coastal schooners lined the waterfront. Events include a parade of sail, boatbuilding and nautical exhibitions, live music, dancing, and fireworks – any or all of which may serve as inspiration for the dozens of artists who will gather to paint in and around the harbor on Friday, August 31st and Saturday, September 1st.

Throughout the weekend, the participating artists will be bringing their finished work to the gallery, where it will be made available for viewing. By 11:00 am on Sunday, all of the final artwork will be on display at Camden Falls Gallery on the Public Landing. The auction will take place on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 pm at the gallery. Local auctioneer Kaja Veilleux of Thomaston Place Auction Galleries will conduct live bidding, and sealed bids will also be accepted. Each painting will also have a “take-it-now” price determined by the individual artist, and a portion of each sale will be donated to the Camden Windjammer Festival.

Internationally-acclaimed marine painter Paul Garnett will be painting in Camden en plein air on Friday and Saturday, and has generously offered to donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of his painting to the Camden Windjammer Festival. This is provided that the buyer allows him to retain the painting until it’s completely dry and can be fully documented and copyrighted by the artist. Garnett is a self-taught marine painter who is well-known for his meticulous renderings of majestic sailing vessels. His artwork has been featured in Nautical World Magazine, Marine Art Quarterly, and Sea History Magazine, and has also graced the covers of several books. Garnett’s paintings have also appeared on A & E’s Sea Tales and The History Channel’s program History’s Mysteries. His work has been exhibited widely in prestigious marine galleries and museums from coast to coast, including the Charlestown Naval Museum, the Union League Club in New York City, the John Stobart Gallery in Boston, the Gallery at Mystic Seaport, and the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. Both the Constitution Museum in Charlestown and the Marine Museum in Fall River Massachusetts have permanent exhibits of his work. The artist is also a longtime member of the National Maritime Historical Society and a member of the International Society of Marine Painters.

Guy Corriero, who has been teaching and painting en plein air on Monhegan Island every summer for nearly 40 years, will not be able to attend the event this year but has generously donated an original 18” x 24” matted watercolor painting, “Swim Beach, Monhegan Island” (valued at $800), with 100% of the selling price donated to the Camden Windjammer Festival. Equally facile in watercolors and oils, Corriero paints both indoors and out. A signature member of the American Watercolor Society who was featured in the Winter 2011 edition of American Artist’s Watercolor magazine, Corriero has worked professionally as an illustrator, commercial artist, and university professor. He has also taught numerous painting workshops and produced a series of art instructional videos.

Other artists who will be participating include: Ian Bruce, Paul Bonneau, Lee Boynton, Allen Bunker, Daniel Corey, Kathleen Galligan, Roberta Goschke, Alison Hill, Monique Lazard, Scott Moore, Stefan Pastuhov, Laurie Proctor, Janis Sanders, Judith Schuppien, Tony vanHasselt, Cali Veilleux, and Michael Vermette.

Camden Falls Gallery invites you to join us as we celebrate Maine’s rich maritime and artistic heritage this Labor Day Weekend with these talented artists. Please come and support the Camden Windjammer Festival by bidding on one or more of your favorites in Sunday’s auction – and take home one of their latest masterpieces as a unique memento of the event!
