Laurie Goddard and Jon Kolkin Exhibit Through the Month of August.

(Rockland, ME) Carver Hill Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of “Lyrical Landscapes and DreamScapes” on Friday, August 5th. First Friday Art Walk hours are 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Laurie Goddard has created a series of lyrical abstracted landscapes on paper and panel. She sees these visual interpretations as distillations of time spent in Italy, Japan, the Middle East and her home in Western Massachusetts. Laurie was heavily influenced by her study of architecture and calligraphy in Japan, and her recent trip to the Middle East has had a profound effect on her work, as well.

“Now that I have traveled a bit in the Middle East - Morocco, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia - the desert, the pace and rhythms of the Bedouin, the colors, the role of women (their clothing) and particularly the music are influencing my work in many new ways.”

Laurie’s works on paper are made with metal leaf, graphite, and acrylic paint. Her works on panel are gessoed hardwood panels gilded with combinations of semi-precious leaf and metallic powders, with gestural and expressionistic over-painting. This process pushes the limits of water based mediums, and forces their compatibility with metals. Pastels, pencil or charcoal are also applied in the detailing. Through this tension and transformation the work becomes a travelogue of modern and antique imagery.

“I am influenced by the great Modernists and the Abstract Expressionists, as well as recorded music and poetry. Gesture, serenity, memory, elegance and the thrill of the hunt are my main motives in painting.”

Laurie’s work can be found in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Amherst and Emerson Colleges, four embassies, and many significant private art collections.

Jon Kolkin’s DreamScapes are his way of elucidating his dream world onto paper through his camera. "It is my firm conviction there are more than 3 dimensions of space and one dimension of time. Scientists specializing in quantum physics support this theory. However, from a more personal perspective, I am intrigued by this concept because of the breathtaking and inspirational experiences I sometimes have in my dreams. I visualize these Dreamscapes in vivid, rich colors, often situated in a lush and sensual environment. I am able to glide through these landscapes, surveying this world from unique macro and micro vantage points. In this journey I also discover intricately designed objects that I have never seen or conceived of..."

Jon’s DreamScape Series was recently selected as the exclusive featured portfolio for the 20 year anniversary edition of the award winning NC Literary Review. B&W Magazine recently published an image from the series as well.
