The Exhibit Runs From August 14th through September 9th.

Carver Hill Gallery will feature more than two dozen of Maine’s finest nature-inspired artists in Contours, a show to benefit Coastal Mountains Land Trust. The second biennial Contours show will hang in the Gallery’s Cider Barn from Friday, August 14 through Wednesday, September 9. The Gallery is open Monday – Saturday, 10:00 – 5:00, and on Sundays by appointment. Proceeds from the sale of every piece in the show will directly benefit the Land Trust’s conservation work. The public is invited to an opening reception on Thursday, August 20, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

The show will feature painting, photography, pastels, mixed media, plyscape, marquetry, and fused glass. Artists participating in Contours include Amy Campbell, Peter Chamberlain, Julie Crane, David Scriven Crowley, Adriance DeGroff, Patricia DuBose Duncan, David Estey, Kate Fitzgerald, Stephen Gleasner, Emily Hopkins, Candice Hutchison, Ted Keller, Anne Kilham, T. Jackson MacC, Jim Macdonald, Ann Makuck, Caren-Marie Michel, Kirk Moore, Jim Nickelson, Dina Petrillo, Peter Ralston, Janet Redfield, Rebecca Rivers, Carol Santora, Dianne Schelble, Ken Schiano, and Jean Victory. A selection of the works included in the show may be seen at www.carverhillgallery.com/events.html.

For Jana Halwick, gallery co-owner and curator of Contours, the decision to host the show was personal: “All of us at Carver Hill are very excited to be hosting this year’s Contours show to benefit Coastal Mountains Land Trust. Public access to some of the gorgeous places protected by the Land Trust was part of the area’s allure for me and one of the primary reasons I relocated here from the Pacific Northwest. My family and I have enjoyed many of the Land Trust’s preserves and are grateful each time we embark on a day’s outing.”

In addition to committing an entire section of their gallery space to host Contours, Carver Hill is also generously donating a portion of their commission from every sale from the show. Regarding the importance of supporting such a cause, Halwick said, “As the area continues to grow, the work done by Coastal Mountains Land Trust becomes increasingly important. We’re very grateful to the participating artists, who are donating all or a portion of their own proceeds from any sale, for sharing our appreciation of local land conservation.”

Contours is sponsored in part by Bangor Savings Bank, which also co-sponsored the first show in 2007. In addition to the bank providing the financial support to help make this event possible, several of its employees are selflessly donating their own time to assist at the opening reception.

Explaining his unhesitating involvement, painter David Scriven Crowley, who will soon be opening his own gallery at 409 Main Street in Rockland, said, “Land conservation helps maintain the natural beauty of this area that inspires so many artists. I have always been very conservation-minded, and it’s important to me to be able to support the Land Trust in this way.”

Land Trust executive director Scott Dickerson noted, “Contours is one of the Land Trust’s most significant fundraising events, and is particularly meaningful because of the connection of landscape and art seen so often in Maine. Our work is primarily funded by the support of individuals and businesses, such as Carver Hill Gallery and the Contours artists, who recognize the value of preserving the scenic, natural, and outdoor recreation resources of this special area.”

Coastal Mountains Land Trust permanently conserves land to benefit the natural and human communities of the western Penobscot Bay region. Since 1986 the Land Trust has protected almost 8,000 acres, including forests, waterfront, and farmland throughout the region. Land Trust preserves offer more than 25 miles of trails. Jana Halwick and Kathryn Matlack opened Carver Hill Gallery in Rockport in 2006. The unique gallery space is a beautifully restored and furnished Cape and attached four-season barn, creating an inviting home environment to display art, furniture, jewelry, and other created works. Rather than offering art as an accessory to the home, they present the home as art. In addition, the gallery is working to establish sustainability on the site, a philosophy which dovetails well with the Land Trust’s conservation ethic. For example, the Cider Barn Event Space, where Contours will be shown, is heated in part by solar panels. For more information, please visit www.carverhillgallery.com or call (207) 236-0745.
