Maine Painter Exhibits Works at Islesford Gallery(Islesford, ME) Henry Isaacs’ paintings reflect an emphasis of painterly qualities over representation. Isaacs renders his images with sparse but clean detail: a flag, the ramble of dock shacks, the line of boats on the shore, the trucks in the parking lot, perhaps bicycles waiting for the return of their riders. Boats sail in the background. Isaacs gives the viewer just enough of these elements to recognize them, and then takes the viewer on a fantastic escapade of paint and color: the goldenrod bottoms of the boats executed with single brush strokes, the patchwork of greens and blues of the shore, and the trucks painted in four shades of rusty red with some dots of blue for good measure. (Image: "View From the Maypole" by Henry Isaacs) His paintings are at once an explosion of the moment, as well as providing welcome respite to the viewer in areas of peace and calm. Henry has worked on Islesford (Little Cranberry Island) for over 25 years and for a number of years now, he has been living there full time. This is Henry’s third year of representation at the Islesford Dock Gallery, though he has decades of friendship with owners Cynthia and Dan Lief. Within that time, a unique partnership has resulted, and the Liefs work closely with Henry in promoting his paintings and exhibitions around the country.

This has allowed Henry to accept commissions, often in very large scale formats – up to twelve feet! Such projects bring together artist, gallery, and collector or public sector client in a collaborative process. The Islesford Dock Gallery has been key in making commissioned work over half of Henry’s output of paintings.
