Island Girls: Featuring Aline Ordman, Brita Holmquist, and Monique Lazard Print E-mail
Editor: Brenda Bonneville

Exhibit Dates are August 18th through August 29th

(Camden, ME) Camden Falls Gallery’s latest exhibition “Island Girls,” features artists Aline Ordman, Brita Holmquist and Monique Lazard. Although the show is whimsically titled, these award-winning veteran painters all share tremendous maturity, strength, and depth of talent as expressed in their paintings of the islands of Penobscot Bay.

Aline Ordman
Aline Ordman is a Master Pastelist and Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America. Aline spends a part of each summer vacationing in Penobscot Bay on Swan’s Island. Ordman’s plein air paintings frequently capture small, poignent vignettes of sun-soaked life along the island’s secluded beaches and rocky shores. Accomplished in both pastel and oil painting, Aline Ordman orchestrates shape and color until her work sings.

A highly sought after teacher, she especially enjoys encouraging students to paint the shapes and values before them, rather than drawing on their preconceptions of what they see. “All painting is really abstract painting, because it’s really about shapes,” she says. As more people fall under the spell of her visual poetry, Aline Ordman’s reputation as an artist, instructor, and illustrator continues to grow.

No matter the location or subject matter, Ordman’s impressionistic style and sensitive rendering of color and light gain recognition. She has been a three-time finalist in national competitions sponsored by The Artist’s Magazine, has twice had her work accepted into the national juried art competition of the American Impressionist Society, and was featured in the February 2012 issue of Pastel Journal. Her oil painting “Awaiting the Dinner Crowd” was one of only 100 works to be accepted into the 13th annual juried exhibition of the American Impressionist Society, out of over 1000 entries that were submitted.

Brita Holmquist
Brita Holmquist, who was born in New York City and attended Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, spent her first winter in Maine in 1970-71 as the resident artist for the Maine Audubon Society. She also worked at Ram Island Arts Center as a designer of arts programs and advertising materials, before traveling to Florence, Italy to study with American painter, Richard Serrin, for two years. Known for the vigorous brushwork, bold colors, and simple, playful shapes in her compositions, Holmquist finds inspiration in the beauty of land, sky, and sea around her. A summer resident of Islesboro, Maine, she says, “My interest in painting islands grew out of the water, just as islands themselves rose from the sea. I paint islands because they are the edge of the livable planet, the thin orange and green wedge between the blues of infinity. They are land’s end, they are mountains in the sea, and from them mankind has sailed into that infinite blue where only the pelagic are at home.”

A longtime leader in Maine’s active arts community, Holmquist has served on a wide variety of boards and advisory councils, including the Portland Arts Council, the Artists’ Advisory Panel to the Maine Arts Commission, and the Advisory Board to the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art. She also cofounded the Peregrine Press, a cooperative artists’ press in Portland. In April 2012, Holmquist was featured in the annual art issue of Maine Home and Design magazine, and her work is in the collections of the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine, and the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine.

Monique Lazard
Monique Lazard is a well-traveled artist whose artistic career began in California and has taken her to Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Maine. A summer resident of 700 Acre Island in Penobscot Bay (the former home of famous American illustrator, Charles Dana Gibson), Lazard has exhibited her work throughout the Philadelphia area and several times at the Islesboro Historical Society Gallery.

Lazard’s professional experience as an artist includes stints as a fashion illustrator and art director for several major publications. She also taught fashion illustration at the Parson School of Design in New York City and worked in editorial, graphic, and advertising design for several years. Her interest in plein air painting developed in the early 1990s, while she was living in Telluride, Colorado. Spending hundreds of hours hiking in the Rocky Mountains, she began by creating miniature landscape paintings in watercolor.

Monique’s contributions to the “Island Girls” exhibition include a variety of scenes from Islesboro, rendered in soft, pastel colors with a painterly style that conveys both the serenity of quiet moments and the dramatic changing light of the island skies.
“What interests me most,” she says, “is the expression of beauty regardless of the form it takes. I may be struck by the form of a person sitting on a bench waiting for a train, or a streak of light hitting the side of a building, or even the drama of the light leaving.” This is certainly evident in her recent work.

Camden Falls Gallery invites you to visit “Island Girls.” Experience island life as it is seen and shared through the work of these talented and insightful artists. The exhibition runs from August 18-29, and the gallery is open daily from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.
