“Constellations” Will be on View August 4 and 5(Port Clyde, ME) Artist Jon Mort will present “Constellations” during his annual open studio at the Fieldstone Castle in Port Clyde on August 4th and 5th. Sharing studio space every summer with his well known artist father Greg Mort, Jon’s stunning larger than life graphite figures and delicate still life images (he calls these “Valentines”) are startlingly different, receiving their own well-deserved acclaim. At his recent “History and Other Dreams” exhibition at Kramer Gallery, Suzan Jenkins, Executive Director of the Montgomery County Arts and Humanities Council declared his work “simply breathtaking”.
After receiving a BA in Studio Art from Franklin & Marshall College, Jon expanded his fascination with design and drawing and went on to gain a Masters in Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design. A self-described “storyteller”, his graphite renderings embrace the narrative potential of portraiture, mythological inspirations, and still-life compositions. As stated by Mort, "My influences are wide-ranging, from architecture to archaeology to astronomy. My graphite depictions are at once allegiant to the craft of physiological exactitude and immersed in the breadth of fantastical narrative. I believe in the potential of work that blends time-honored techniques with fresh compositions”. Carla Massoni, director of Massoni Art Gallery, introduced Jon’s Planet Collection this past winter to rave reviews. Massoni states: “Jon is an exciting young artist, fully a product of the 21st century. He has been exposed to all the technical bells and whistles of his time and training. And yet, he chose graphite as his medium – a simple pencil and sheet of paper are his tools. His subject is the classic figure and his inspiration – the ancient myths. As an artist and a modern man he travels back in space and time engaged in a creative process that is controlled, precise and shaped by premeditation in his effort to produce work that is energetic, expressive and examines our assumptions about the familiar. By blending time-honored techniques and the classical narrative – Jon Mort tells us new stories in his fresh compositions.” Mort has had over twenty museum and gallery exhibitions to his credit and in 2013 his work will be featured in an exhibition at the Phillips Museum of Art. Constellations will mark his fourth Maine annual open studio. His work can be found in private collections around the country. Find Jon Mort online at www.jonmortstudio.com and on Facebook.
