Join the Festivities on December 2nd During First Friday Art Walk.(Rockland, ME) Carver Hill Gallery will be displaying a special showing of smaller works for this First Friday Art Walk. The Gallery is especially happy to announce Ten By Ten, a series of gorgeous work by Maine artist Diane Bowie Zaitlin. The gallery has been a huge fan of Zaitlin’s for quite some time, and this will be an introduction to what we hope will be many more showings in the future. These particular pieces by Zaitlin are encaustic, an ancient process that uses heat to fix color and beeswax. The Egyptians used this technique in their mummification portraits in 100 AD, and it was also made popular by artists in the Mexican muralism movement, such as Diego Rivera. She has added silver leaf to these pieces, which creates a gorgeous metallic effect that she covers and uncovers with pigment. Zaitlin says, “I love the depth, surface and luminosity of encaustic. I also like encaustic painting because it’s a very flexible medium that can easily combine painting and collage. It dries quickly and can be used as both a reductive and additive process. I love working with color, and encaustic allows light between layers to give the painting unique depth and translucence.” Diane holds a BFA degree from The University of Connecticut. She also studied at Skidmore College, and attended several workshops at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, and spent time at locally Art Week at Great Spruce Head Island. Diane is also a teacher of encaustic painting as well.

First Friday hours are 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and Saturday 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
