Opens June 30th and Runs Through July 28th

(Camden, ME) The narrative of children’s books is delightfully illustrated in this show by works from Chris Van Dusen and Nina Holland from Camden, and Stephen Costanza from Belfast. These original illustrations yield a rich variety of color, expression and detail. Nina Holland’s unpublished pages from The Cat Goes to The Alhambra is an eye-catching mélange of Islamic motifs and fable. They are accompanied by The Blue Camel, a kinetic sculpture.

From children’s books the show moves to other forms of narrative. Owls and crows from Barbara Fischer Eldred, and carved folk-art animals from Daniel Strawser, a traditional Pennsylvania German carver, evoke mythology, fables and tales. Hilary Irons’ Animal Garlands and Lauren Montenaro Norster’s ink and watercolor maps are other forms of narratives which accompany us throughout our negotiation of life and history. The show is embellished with polymer clay jewelry by Linda Leach and Deb Thuss, glass jewelry by Penny Gentle, and Ms. Thuss’s Star Dancers.

Narrative opens on Saturday, June 30th with a special opening for kids from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. They are welcome to bring their personal copies of books by Chris Van Dusen and Stephen Costanza to be signed by the authors. Chris will also have prints of his work for purchase. There will be a second opening from 5:00 to 8:00 pm for adults, with live music at both openings. We look forward to sharing this exciting show with local and visiting families—something special for everyone as summer arrives.

Old Salts Gallery is located at 25 Mechanic Street at the corner of Washington Street in Camden. The gallery is underwritten by the law firm of Markham and Read. It is a non-profit gallery dedicated to the support of Maine artists. Please contact penny@oldsaltsgallery.com for further information.
