At the StoneCrop Gallery in Ogunquit

(Ogunquit, ME) The StoneCrop Gallery is pleased to announce "In Color," an exhibition of photographs by internationally celebrated artist Harold Feinstein. The show will run August 7th through September 10, 2011. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 13th from 2:00 to 6:00 pm. The photographs in Harold Feinstein’s “In Color” offer an exceptional opportunity into a world we are not typically at freedom to observe: the breathtaking and intelligent systems that make up the complex patterns seen on butterflies, seashells and plant life.

Photographed with incredible precision and detail on black backgrounds, these astonishing organic structures are presented in over sized prints that allow the viewer to be effortlessly enveloped in the intricate workings of each subject.

About the Artist
Harold Feinstein has been photographing for an impressive sixty years. At the young age of nineteen, his work had already been purchased for the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art. Feinstein is best known for his extensive documentation of Coney Island, New York, but his breadth is far greater. His portfolio includes photo essays from the Korean War, documentary street work, nudes, landscapes, and, most recently, stunning large-scale color photographic investigations of flowers, seashells, and butterflies. He has been published, collected and exhibited internationally, including shows at the MoMa, the International Center for Photography, the George Eastman House, and the Musée d'Art Moderne.

About StoneCrop
After purchasing the land in the early 1920s, Grace Merrill built StoneCrop on Shore Road near Perkins Cove with salvaged materials from an old barn and other local structures. She reclaimed the barn’s hand-hewn pine timbers to construct a 24-foot high great room, while a damaged 18th century dwelling supplied a stone fireplace and a unique staircase. As construction proceeded, she scoured the surrounding towns for wood, doors, windows—whatever she could find that fit her vision for the home. “From all sides, old materials seemed to pour in,” Merrill wrote. “All summer, my long-suffering car was adorned with bags of cement, old brick, and iron in varied shapes.” The result of her vision is this unique house with a special history. StoneCrop has been a home to artists for much of the past century. Two previous owners, painter Ruth Seeger and printmaker Beverly Hallam, are still active in the Perkins Cove area. Current owner and photographer Dana Berenson welcomes you to StoneCrop and the StoneCrop Gallery. Stonecrop Gallery is located at 805 Shore Road in Ogunquit.
