Linden Frederick Belfast Senior College Maine Art Exhibit

The Exhibit Runs May 13th Through May 16th and Features Special Guest Speaker Linden Frederick.

(Belfast, ME) The Festival of Arts is a non-juried exhibit presented by Senior College scheduled to run May 13th through May 16th at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center, located at 80 Belmont Avenue (Route 3 west) in Belfast. The artists featured are both amateur and professional in this non-juried event.

Last year, there were 135 artists from across the state, and over 900 visitors from Maine and 13 other states. With the expansion of the Hutchinson Center, this year there will be 158 artists exhibiting their artwork. This year Senior College is proud and delighted to sponsor a children’s art exhibit, grades K-12 from RSU 20 in the meeting rooms at the end of the new wing at the Hutchinson Center. Their art teachers have chosen works from all the schools. Art is enjoyed by people of all ages and we can all learn something new by viewing works from various artists. The creativity of the spirit starts at a young age and spills over to all academic areas.

Senior College is extremely pleased to welcome special guest speaker and artist, Linden Frederick. Mr. Frederick will soon have another exhibit at the Forum Gallery on Fifth Avenue in New York City, featuring paintings from the Belfast area. Linden Frederick is a realist artist, who captures the essence and purity of every day scenes in our lives. He received his education in Ontario College of Art, Toronto, Canada; Academia de Belle Arte, Florence, Italy; and Houghton College, Houghton, NY. As Carl Little wrote in Maine Home + Design, April 2008, "... Linden Frederick is one of the foremost painters of America's byways, highways, and backyards. He can make the humblest objects or places... resonate with mystery... and is a poet of the overlooked. The painter also has a passion for painting around the time when dusk appears. His ability to capture the most subtle gradations of twilight using oil paints is remarkable."

This year's featured artist is Judith Long. Judith’s wall hangings are hand sculpted out of terracotta clay in high relief and combine the elements of drawing and painting in conjunction with sculpture. This technique enables her to create a world that comes to life and tells a story. Because she uses clay as her medium and no molds are used in this creation process, the heaviness requires her to construct hidden support systems similar to an architect constructing a building. The time it takes to dry the clay is also critical—if it dries too fast, it will crack. Each sculpture requires 4 to 6 months to complete.

The entire festival is FREE to the artists and for the public. There are no entry fees for artists, and there are no fees charged to the public to see the exhibit or to attend any of the events and demonstrations.

The schedule of events is as follows:
