There will be an opening reception on Friday, September 3rd from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. (Image: "Street Dance" by Susan Tobey White) Susan Tobey White founded High Street Gallery. She is well known for her generous and encouraging teaching style, and offers classes and workshops in the studio. Her canvases of vibrant dancers and bright colors have inspired smiles and laughter, but new colors and emotions are emerging from her most recent work. Sheep Jones, an artist from Virginia, has been showing her work at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria and was chosen from 140 artists as Artist of the Year in 2003. Her whimsical figurative work and still life oil and encausitc paintings are a wonderful addition to the gallery. Julie Cyr, a painter from Portsmouth, NH, has had careers as a professional musician, singer, songwriter and as a registered nurse. Julie’s paintings of buildings have a very solid, strong feel to them while also having a sense of mystery. Her paintings of birds and animals can also claim the description of “whimsical.” Jeanne Dawson’s career in art began as a fiber artist. She created sculptural two and three dimensional pieces, using materials she dyed herself. She enjoyed numerous awards for her fiber art through the eight years she worked in the arena. Like so many others, Dawson left one arena and entered another. She carried with her her love of texture, color and layering. Each of these are strong elements in her painting. For the past five years, Dawson has worked in acrylic and is excited with the opportunities it lends her. Gail Savitz received an MFA degree in Ceramics from the Claremont Graduate School. After graduating, she lived and made pottery in NYC. She moved to Northport, Maine in 1971 where she married and raised two sons. She makes both functional and one-of-a-kind pieces, both hand-built and wheel-thrown pottery using stoneware, and porcelain clay in her studio on the waterfront in Belfast, Maine. Angus MacPhail attributes his interest in tile and primitive pottery to his experiences growing up in Europe and North Africa. Through his work, he attempts to reflect the functional art of the Mediterranean as it has been refined for centuries, and adds a distinctive element of his own experience as a commercial fisherman and gardener. Blue Moon Carvers has been producing art since 1982 in the foothills of Maine. With clay carving as a specialty, each artwork is a one of a kind creation, exciting and constantly evolving. Upholding a tradition of excellence in specialty clay, Blue Moon has customers world wide. Fall gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and Sunday by chance or appointment.
