At the Old White Church on Loan From the Penney Family of Hollis, Maine(Bar Mills, ME) Born in Laconia, New Hampshire, Bruce Penney (1929-1988) studied at the Phoenix School of Design in NYC, and entered the rich period of American art inspired by Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, Salvador Dali, Picasso, and others. His work reflected the artistic mood of the era—spare New England villages evoking loneliness, isolated figures in melancholy solitude on Cape Cod beaches, and his young son pensive among the dunes. (Image: Painting by Bruce Barton Penney) His still lifes and rural landscapes, some rich in color, some stark, augmented his popularity at art auctions and galleries in New York, Vermont and Florida, and contributed to his stature as a major American artist.
