At the Home & Away Gallery, June 3 through June 6, 2010.(Kennebunkport, ME) As part of the Kennebunkport Fine Living Festival, award-winning beadwork artist Todd Lonedog Bordeaux will visit the Home & Away Gallery and display his work as well as that of his partner, Karen Beaver. While Bordeaux observes many Lakota traditions, with his artwork, he combines the traditional with the contemporary. Through Bordeaux’s artistic vision, the traditional Lakota buffalo hide wintercount has evolved into exquisite, award winning beaded story sticks. (Image: Cradleboard by Todd Lonedog Bordeaux) This melding of the old and the new also takes shape in beaded bracelets, pins, and other meticulously beaded items. One of Bordeaux’s more recent award winners is titled “21st Century Cradleboard”. Modeled after traditional Sioux baby carriers, this stunning piece combines traditional materials, such as moose hide, buffalo fur, trade cloth, horse hair and antique beads, with contemporary materials, such as stainless steel. Karen Beaver (Mandan/Yup'ik) learned how to bead at age twelve from her Mandan/Hidatsa grandmother. She combines traditions from the tundra and the Great Plains in her beaded mask compositions, in award winning portrayals of famous Native Americans such as Jim Thorpe, and in her dynamic sculptures. Both Bordeaux and Beaver were chosen to exhibit in the Museum of Art & Design's "Changing Hands: Art without Reservation, 2" exhibit in 2006.
