Friday, March 2nd Kicks Off the 2012 Exhibition Season

(Belfast, ME) After being closed since December, Waterfall Arts in Belfast will kickoff the 2012 exhibition season with three building-wide shows. The first floor Clifford Gallery will host the sole mid-coast appearance of the acclaimed multi-media touring exhibit, Painters, Players and Poets, unique collaboration celebrating the talents of Maine artists. In the Fallout Shelter, Waterfall Arts' fifth of Branching Out series will be on display, with collaborative works around the theme of water. And on the three floors throughout the Corridor Gallery, Gardiner Area Artists will be featured.

Painters, Players & Poets
Writer/Producer Con Fullam asked several well-known Maine composers and poets to identify a living Maine painter, whose work inspired them, and to choose a specific work to interpret through poetry or music. Fullam originally had the idea when he was a young man visiting the home of South Berwick painter Dewitt Hardy. “And obviously his paintings were everywhere you could look. I became smitten by one and began to write a tune about it,” he says. The notion revisited Fullam three years ago, and he’s been working on this project ever since.

Painters includes 16 painters, 9 musicians/composers, 7 poets and 16 furniture makers. Exhibition visitors use a CD-player to listen to the original words or music as they view the paintings and sit in the custom-made chairs. Some of the featured musicians are Noel Paul Stookey, Jonathan Edwards, Cindy Bullens, Paul Sullivan, Con Fullam, and Brad Terry. Amongst the painters are Dewitt Hardy, Dahlov Ipcar, Kate Cheney Chappell, Rob Shetterly and Monica Kelly. Poets include Martin Steingesser, Betsy Sholl, and Jeffrey Thomson. Unique chairs are made by Thomas Moser, Kevin Rodel, Wayne Hall, Peter Turner, Aaron Fedarko and 12 others. Brad Terry will be performing a concert at Waterfall Arts on Sunday, March 25th.

Branching Out: Water
The second exhibit highlights innovative work of artist mentoring teams in the FallOut Shelter. The popular program now in its fifth year, Branching Out pairs working artists with area teen artists to create collaborative art of all media, based on an environmental theme. This year’s theme is water as a precious global resource. The show will include paintings, claywork, installations, video animation, fiberwork, and photography. Participating artists and teens represent the towns of Belfast, Camden, Searsport, Liberty, Brooks and Northport. The pairs include: Kenny Cole/Selena Johnson, Kris Engman/Melie McFadden, Ingrid Ellison, Kevin Johnson/Emma Bonneville, Joan Proudman, MaryJean Viano Crowe, Beth Berman, Seth Whited/Wes Sterrs and Russell Kahn/Olivia Surprise.

Gardiner Area Artists
Gardiner area artists round out the exhibitions in the Corridor Gallery with work on three floors. Six artists from the ArtDogs studio collective in downtown Gardiner – Karen Adrienne, John Carnes, Matt Demers, Judith Schuppien, Scott Minzy, and Nancy Barron—and two area friends, Robert Saunders and Ed Mackenzie show about 25 pieces altogether. All work will be on display through Wednesday, March 28th.

The opening celebrations will be held Friday, March 2nd from 5:00 to 7:00 pm throughout the building. Waterfall Arts is Waldo County’s non-profit community art center, supported by and serving residents and visitors of all ages since 2000.
