(Image: Oval Boxes, Mount Lebanon, N.Y. and Canterbury, N.H., circa 1840) (Portland, ME) The exhibit runs October 27, 2011 through February 5, 2012. This exhibition tells the story of the first and most avid collectors of the Shaker art, Faith and Edward Deming Andrews. Of the more than 200 objects from the Andrews Collection, Shaker furniture, printed works, visual art, tools, textiles, and small craft collected during four decades from the Andrews collection will be featured. The most comprehensive collection of Shaker materials ever assembled, the exhibition will provide insight into the Andrews’ complex role as pioneers in the field of Shaker studies. Organized by the Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, this exhibition will examine the full scope of the Andrews’ involvement with Shakerism-as scholars, collectors, and dealers. From the 1920s through the 1960s, the Andrews actively pursued Shaker objects, collecting mainly from the Shakers themselves. Through careful documentation and scholarship the Andrewses illuminated these materials, and their collection has bequeathed to future generations the most comprehensive body of evidence on the culture of the United States of Believers.
