(Belfast, ME) Belfast Creative Coalition has invited artist and author Jackie Battenfield to speak on Monday, August 27th, at 6:30 pm at the Hutchinson Center to present her talk, "Making An Artist’s Life Work". Battenfield is an artist who is known nationally for her luminous paintings and prints of natural forces. For the last twenty years, she has made a living from her art and is a popular motivational speaker on the challenges of sustaining a successful career in the visual arts.

Battenfield is the author of The Artist's Guide: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love, Da Capo Press, 2009, now in it’s sixth printing (www.artistcareerguide.com). Her work is represented by the Addison Ripley Gallery in Washington, D.C.; Addington Gallery, in Chicago; and DM Contemporary in New York. Battenfield teaches professional practices in the graduate program at Columbia University and for the Creative Capital Foundation.

Artists today have unprecedented access to opportunities and potential worldwide circulation of their work. More than ever before, artists must manage themselves: they must be knowledgeable and well informed to juggle multiple venues and an increasingly international market. They need to develop flexible systems to respond to future changes and continue to thrive.

Battenfield’s 90-minute talk will go over the fundamental skills artists need to develop and sustain a professional life while juggling other jobs and a personal life. It provides an overview of Battenfield’s widely acclaimed book, and covers tips on how to plan, promote, fund, organize, and build community. Many of the artists that are successful selling their artwork in Maine and outside of Maine’s borders, use Battenfield’s book as a guide.

“I’ve really only used a small portion of what Jackie’s book has to offer and have still experienced an immense degree of confidence and an incredibly positive sense of self worth in terms of understanding who I am as an artist and how I choose to navigate and present myself among all of the various players and parts that make up the complex culture of the contemporary art world.”
--Maine Artist Kenny Cole

The evening will begin with light hors d'oeuvres and drinks in the Atrium. Battenfield will then give a 90 minute talk in the auditorium, with enough time to address audience questions, followed by a book signing. Please join the Belfast Creative Coalition, artists and other creatives for this spectacular opportunity. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door. Please RSVP to kimberly@belfastcreativecoalition.org. For more information visit www.belfastcreativecoalition.org.
