(Belfast, ME) As part of the War on Peace exhibit at Waterfall Arts, photographer Harlan Crichton will give an artist’s talk on Thursday, October 18th at 7:00pm. Crichton’s photographs of recent veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are on display in the art center’s Corridor Gallery through November 21.

Crichton, a Waldo County native, graduated in 2012 from the Maine College of Art in Portland. He’ll show earlier work and discuss his process and the creative evolution that led him to create this series, In the Shadow of the Burning Dog. Admission to the talk is by donation at the door.

In another event related to the War on Peace exhibit, Americans Who Tell the Truth, Operation Breaking Stereotypes and Waterfall Arts will offer a free workshop, “Inspiring Citizenship and Student Performance” for Maine middle and high school educators. The workshop will be held at Waterfall Arts on Thursday, October 18th from 3:30 to 7:00 pm.

The intent of the workshop is to frame course content in a meaningful real world context to guide students to become informed, courageous citizens. A selection of Rob Shetterly’s Americans Who Tell the Truth (AWTT) portraits are on exhibit at Waterfall Arts through November 21st. Apart from being inspiring and stimulating paintings, they have, over the past decade, proven to be accessible and effective classroom tools, especially in the visual and performing arts, social studies, history, and English/language arts disciplines.

Operation Breaking Stereotypes is a non-profit, service-based organization working with schools in Maine, Boston, and New York City to help students address ethnic, socioeconomic, gender, and racial stereotypes through writing, reading, music, photography, and personal connections. Since its founding in 2002, OBS has worked with more than 1000 Maine, Boston, and New York City middle and high school students, facilitating exchanges between diverse groups of learners.

Presenters at the workshop include AWTT founder, Rob Shetterly, AWTT portrait subject Florence Reed and Karen MacDonald of the King Middle School in Portland, Maine. Space will be limited to the first 40 teachers and administrators who wish to attend.

Waterfall Arts, now in its 13th year, is located at 256 High Street in Belfast. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and by appointment. For more information about the War on Peace exhibit, Crichton’s talk, the educator’s workshop and additional events and classes, please visit waterfallarts.org or call 338-2222.
