As part of the monthly series of artist lectures, Swanvill painter Janice Kasper will show her work and discuss her creative process. Kasper describes her work as ”directly related to (the) growing concern over the protection of wildlife and wild lands in Maine." Her dramatic oil paintings feature portraits of moose, deer, birds, otters, wolves and other animals set in landscapes that often reveal the ever present and ever growing intrusion of man and technology upon nature. Kasper received a BFA in Painting from the University of Connecticut and studied with Leonard Craig at Unity College and at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Her work is in collections around the country, including the Portland Museum of Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Hitchcock Collection at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. She exhibits at the Caldbeck Gallery in Rockland and other galleries in Maine and New York and has received grants from the Artist Resource Trust and the Maine Arts Commission. In 2007, Kasper received an artist-in-residence position at Denali National Park in Alaska, where she was able to explore the ideal of the Alaskan wilderness as it compared to the wilderness in Maine. Now in its 7th year, the lecture series at Waterfall Arts features engaging and inspiring presentations by regionally and nationally recognized artists, poets, writers and art historians, followed by lively discussions. Admission is $7 at the door, and high school and college students are free. For more information, call 338-2222 or visit the Waterfall Arts website.
