(Belfast, ME) Joline Blais will speak at Waterfall Arts in Belfast on Monday, April 26 at 7:00 pm as part of the ongoing Artist Lecture Series. Blais, who recently moved to Belfast with her husband John Ippolito and two children, is an associate professor of New Media at the University of Maine. With Ippolito, she directs Still Water, a new media program involving network art and culture. Blais and Ippolito co-founded LongGreenHouse, a working alliance of native culture, digital culture and permaculture. LongGreenHouse weaves the Wabanaki Longhouse, permaculture gardens, and networked collaboration together into a hybrid "communiversity". Collaborators include UMaine, Wassookeag School, and eco-village groups in Maine. Blais’ recent projects include RFC: Request for Ceremony, a call for re-investing daily life with ceremony; and the Cross-Cultural Partnership, a legal framework for developing trust networks with indigenous people. In 2006, with Ippolito, Blais co-authored “At the Edge of Art”, an investigation of how new strategies of empowerment--execution rather than representation--work in communities of new media artists, and how these practices reshape both art and real world contexts. The lecture series at Waterfall Arts, now in its 7th year, features engaging and inspiring presentations by regionally and nationally recognized artists, poets, writers and big thinkers, followed by discussion. Admission is $7 at the door; high school and college students are free. For more information, please call 338-2222 or visit waterfallarts.org. |
