(Image: Preparing Meals on Wheels) (Belfast, ME) Waterfall Arts is pleased to host the United Way of Eastern Maine’s Waldo County Health Awareness Project (HAP), an innovative, photography-based community health education pilot, in its Corridor Gallery. The exhibit opens on December 14th with a reception from 5 to 7 pm for the many collaborating artists, community organizations and public. Eleni Murphy, Waldo HAP project coordinator, collaborated with people of all ages to take a close look at local social and physical environments. The exhibit at Waterfall Arts is the final culmination of the project, and is an effort to educate the community about health in Waldo County, and the steps to take to participate, volunteer, or donate to any of Waldo HAP’s organizations. Students from BCOPE, Belfast Community Outreach Program in Education, are one of the groups involved in the HAP. They documented their school as a social environment, and also investigated the economy of Waldo County, meeting with local business owners and employees and photographing them. Game Loft participants also documented many activities that take place both at the Game Loft and within the community. One photographer said “I didn’t realize until I started taking photos that everyone feels physically and emotionally safe here.” Peace Jam, a group of Mt. View High School students, documented their social environment and captured their role as environmental activists within the high school. Waldo County Meals on Wheels, another participating group, helps maintain independence for homebound people who are unable to cook and or shop for themselves. Meals on Wheels volunteers shared their delivery routes, and MOW recipients shared their experiences with the program. Spectrum Generations’ Adult Day Break (ADB) is dedicated to assisting older adults or people with disabilities to remain able, active and alert. Adult Day Break provides social support in a comfortable environment with daily activities and healthy meals. Waldo County Action Partners is also an integral part of ADB, as it provides transportation for many of the participants. Adult Day Break took photographs of their daily environment and BCOPE students also documented the many activities at the program. Martha Piscuskas, Director of Programming at Waterfall Arts, states that “Bringing together different sectors of our community is a part of Waterfall Arts’ mission - to create community in harmony with nature through the transformative power of the arts. We are delighted to be working with Eleni Murphy and United Way of Eastern Maine and offering exhibition space for this project. Using art as a way to increase awareness, and offer creative solutions to community problems, is absolutely one of our roles as a community art center.” The opening reception is free, and all are welcome to attend. The Waldo HAP exhibit will be on display through the end of February 2013. Waterfall Arts is located at 256 High Street in Belfast. Gallery hours through December 23rd are 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, with the gallery closed on Mondays. For gallery hours after the 23rd, please visit www.waterfallarts.org or call 338-2222.
