Maine landscape architect Theresa Mattor will present a talk and slideshow on legendary Maine landscapes and the architects who created them on Friday evening, July 10, at 7:00 pm at Left Bank Books in Searsport. The talk coincides with the publication of Designing the Maine Landscape, co-authored by Mattor and Lucie Teegarden, and just published by Down East Books this summer. The event is free and the community is warmly invited. Designing the Maine Landscape celebrates Maine’s heritage of designed landscapes, from Portland to the west and Camden to “down east.” While historic buildings have been studied for decades, the authors write, interest in historic landscape preservation is relatively recent. The new book caps a ten year survey of such landscapes, undertaken jointly by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and the Maine Olmstead Alliance, whose mission is to protect the state's parks and landscapes through research, advocacy and public education. Like the survey, the book is divided into four sections: public landscapes; public buildings; private homes and estates; and "designed neighborhoods" including historic suburbs, industrial towns and summer communities.
“All have an intriguing story to tell,” says Mattor, about the personalities who created them, the patrons who funded them, and the challenges they have faced for survival and re-use. "But in a larger sense, they also tell the story of Maine: its distinctive and beautiful natural environment, the vision and energy of its people, and the sense of community that those of us lucky enough to live here deeply cherish.” Theresa Mattor has a BA degree in landscape architecture from the University of Oregon and has been a registered landscape architect in Maine since 1988. Based in Portland , her work encompasses park, subdivision and home design, the development of comprehensive town plans and master plans for historic landscapes, and research, writing and lecturing about contemporary landscapes and native Maine plants. Come early and you'll have time for a tour of Searsport's own historic townscape, Left Bank Books' beautiful brick building, and the town's hidden jewel, Mosman Park.
