(Hallowell, ME) The Kennebec Valley Art Association invites artist submissions to Art2012, the 17th annual juried show at the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell. Art2012 is open to all Maine artists and to any artist with a strong connection to Maine. Original fine art in any media may be submitted, including hand pulled prints, photography and sculpture as well as fine crafts, including ceramics, glass and fiberart. Jewelry and clothing are not eligible.

Each artist may submit up to three works of art, which must be the artists own original work created within the last three years. Any work that has been previously exhibited at the Harlow Gallery is not eligible. Giclees and other reproductions are not eligible.

Entry fees are not refundable and decisions of the jurors are final. All works entered must be original creations by the artist and must be show ready upon delivery to the Harlow Gallery. The Harlow Gallery is owned and operated by the Kennebec Valley Art Association, membership-based 501(c)3 non-profit; jurying fees help offset the cost of organizing and presenting the juried show and are not refundable.

The deadline for electronic submissions is midnight on April 1, 2012. For complete entry rules and instructions on how to enter Art2012, please visit www.harlowgallery.org. The jurors will do a first review based on the digital submissions and ask artists whose work they wish to consider for the final review to deliver their work to the Harlow Gallery so that the work can be viewed in person. Any work for onsite review must be available to be delivered to the Harlow Gallery on Saturday, April 28th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Sunday, April 29th from noon to 4:00 pm, or Monday, April 30th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The jurors will make their final selections for the exhibition and awards by reviewing the actual work the first week of May.

Cash prizes and gift certificates worth $1,500 from area business sponsors will be awarded at an awards ceremony at the exhibition's opening on Friday, May 11th at 6:00 pm. The Art2012 exhibition will be on view from May 11th to June 2nd and is free and open to the public. Jurors this year are Luc Demers and Amy Stacey Curtis.

Luc Demers
“I am passionate about photography. Photographs are one of the most powerful means of communication and I find this to be particularly true in photographs that have a clear sense of personality or place. We are strongly drawn into the images that we feel connected to whether it is through shared experiences or a desire to participate in the narrative. Since 1994 I have been working as a commercial photographer. With a background in the fine arts and graphic design, I was seduced by the power and beauty of photography as a medium. I still pursue photography as a fine art in my personal work and feel that it enhances my ability to think creatively on commercial and editorial shoots.” –Luc Demers. Amy Stacey Curtis
In 1998, Amy Stacey Curtis began an 18-year commitment to art-making, a project which would culminate through 9 solo-biennial exhibits from the year 2000 to the year 2016. In the end, Curtis will have installed 81 large-in-scope, interactive installations and new-media works in the vast mills of eight or nine Maine towns. Each solo-biennial exhibit is a 22-month process, each exhibit exploring a different theme while requiring audience to perpetuate its multiple installations. The Maine Arts Commission’s 2005 Individual Artist Fellow for Visual Art, Curtis has committed to this work to convey that we are a part of a whole, that everyone and everything is connected. Curtis' seventh of nine solo biennials, SPACE, will take place October 6 through 26, 2012 throughout 30,000+ square feet of one of Maine’s vast abandoned mills or other industrial spaces. The Harlow Gallery is located at 160 Water Street in Hallowell. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday noon to 6:00 pm. For more information please contact Nancy Barron or Deb Fahy by calling 207-622-3813 emailing kvaa@harlowgallery.org or visiting www.harlowgallery.org.
