(Image: "Cash Bazooka" by Brian Reeves) (Hallowell, ME) Come to a Draw-A-Thon in support of the Occupy movement on Saturday, January 21st (snow date January 22nd), from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell, where we will gather as a friendly group of artists to continue our ongoing efforts to draw and create around issues. You need not have any experience creating political art and in fact much of the work created is often of a non political nature as our mission is to visualize alternatives to destructive practices. Our paramount goal is to gather as a community of individual artists and explore our individual creativity within the camaraderie of a group. Some of the work will be photo silk-screened for subsequent Print-A-Thons and appear in an April exhibit at Harlow, titled: “OCCUPY ART! The Union of Maine Visual Artists in Action”.
(Image: "Sheep No More" by William Hessian) The Union of Maine Visual Artists has held Draw-A-Thons, Draw-Ins and Print-A-Thons, in support of the Bring Our War $$ Home, a campaign coordinated with the Global Network Against Nuclear Power and Weapons in Space, Codepink Maine, Peace Action Maine, and Maine Veterans for Peace. Artists gathered together twice; first in Bath and then in Portland, at Space Gallery, for two full days of creativity and camaraderie in support of this project. We produced over 75 original drawings and created 4 different zines, which were distributed to legislators as visual representations of what would be a better use of our tax dollars. We also created art in-situ at the State House as part of our Draw-Ins, including a Draw-In during the Maine Labor History Mural rally. At our Print-A-Thons in Gardiner, Portland and Unity College, we produced silk-screened posters and t-shirts bearing imagery developed at the Draw-Ins and Draw-A-Thons. “OCCUPY ART! The Union of Maine Visual Artists in Action” will display much of the art generated at these actions. It is an exhibit that will capture the spirit and ongoing creative energy that began here in Maine prior to the Occupy movement, and will continue beyond this exhibit, presenting grassroots creative arts activism at its best. The exhibit will feature work by Rob Shetterly, Brian Reeves, Kenny Cole, Nora Tryon, Natasha Mayers, and many other Union of Maine Visual Artists. Steve Burke will assist with the printing. The Harlow Gallery is located at 160 Water Street in Hallowell. For more information, please visit harlowgallery.org. To become a Union of Maine Visual Artists member visit umvaonline.org.
