(Photo by Julia Cervantes) July 11th through August 8th. Join the Bates Dance Festival and experience the power and invention of contemporary dance and music. The six-week festival features premiere performances, panel discussions, and lectures by more than 30 internationally recognized dance artists who bring deeply considered perspectives to the stage with grace, humor and eloquence. Highlighting the season are two nuanced and penetrating works by Kate Weare Company (on Saturday, July 11th), a world premiere melding modern dance and African traditions by Battleworks (July 16th & 18th), an operatic and humorous fairytale about contemporary motherhood from Tania Isaac Dance (July 24th & 25th), and an exquisite multimedia meditation on beauty by Bebe Miller Company (July 31st & August 1st). Also on the season, Different Voices (August 6th & 7th) features new works by emerging voices from the Nigeria, Kenya, the Philippines and the U.S. In addition to main stage performances, the festival offers a selection of free and low-cost events including the annual Musician’s Concert, Moving in the Moment improvisation concert, and the Festival Finale, a showcase of student talent. To deepen your performance experiences please take advantage of “Inside Dance - Understanding Contemporary Dance,” a series of lectures and post-performance talks led by Boston dance critic, Debra Cash.
