On Friday, April 23rd at 7:30 pm. Growing up in Memphis, Tennessee, Valencia first began honing her skills in church settings, while listening to such greats as Mahalia Jackson and James Cleveland. After completing high school, Valencia sang in performance spaces around Memphis before deciding to further test her skills. After saving up enough money for a ticket to Europe, she traveled to France where she spent the next six months performing in various clubs and theaters as a blues singer. This enriching experience gave Valencia the confidence needed to record her debut CD, a five-song masterpiece that’s considered a classic by music industry professionals and fans across the globe. Valencia’s talents have allowed her to work with such noted artists as Cleveland, Jack Ashford of The Funk Bros. (Motown), Carla Thomas, and Edwin Hawkins to name just a few. Not one to be boxed in, Valencia has mastered music styles ranging from jazz, soul, folk, opera, and blues.
Joshua McClain is an adventurer in both his life and his music. Although Joshua plays the guitar and likes to sing when the spirit moves him, his main instrument is the cello. While the cello is traditionally associated with classical music it has, rather recently, found itself outside of this genre. Joshua likes to explore many different sounds with his instrument including but not limited to jazz, folk, blues, and rock. His playing style can be exceptionally expressive and emotional and at times can be as funky, driving, and bluesy as a cello can get. Joshua graduated in 2007 from Indiana University with degrees in both communication & culture and folklore & ethnomusicology. He spent much of this time playing with different musicians as he was slowly introduced to different styles and has played and recorded with many musicians including the legendary Hawaiian folk singer Jon Osorio, Eurasian Rung, TV Mike and the Scarecrows, The Veranda Trio, A&R and Trio in Stereo, among others.
