(Harpswell, ME) Harbor Works Gallery features "Folk Photography: America in Real Photo Postcards, 1905-1920" through April 30, 2012. There will be an open house and reception on Friday, August 12th, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. It was the most popular form of communication, a social network of its time. Teddy Roosevelt was President, the Boston Red Sox had just won the first World Series, Ford’s Model A had rolled off the factory floor and the Hershey Bar had reached nearly every grocery store, when Kodak introduced the folding pocket camera, enabling anyone of modest means to make a real photo postcard. Before long thousands of Americans were sending pictures of their families, friends and communities—a folk photography of a rural society on the edge of commercialization and a frontier that would disappear within a generation. Harbor Works Gallery is located on Holbrook's Wharf in the Holbrook-Trufant House, 977C Cundy's Harbor Road in Harpswell. The gallery is open Tuesdays from 5:00 – 7:00 pm; Wednesday through Friday from 1:00 to 7:00 pm; and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 to 7:00 pm. Hours by appointment are also available by calling 207-841-9812. |
