William Shakespeare’s tragedy King Lear will be presented by Camden Civic Theatre Co. at the Camden Opera House in four performances July 1-5. Originally scheduled for April, cast changes forced a series of postponements. King Lear is the story of an aging king who gives up his kingdom, only to regret it. There is a secondary plot of the Earl of Gloucester and his two sons, one of whom plots to frame the other with murder. Themes involve conflict between generations, struggle for power, and search for truth. While it definitely qualifies as a tragedy, there’s plenty of humor and poetry to lighten the play. Woodruff A. Gaul of Belfast will direct, with Jim Dugan of Rockland producing and assisting. Director Woody Gaul has been acting locally for some time and most notably portrayed Hamlet in CCT’s 2006 production. Jim Dugan began his acting career in that Hamlet and has continued with CCT. Most recently, both Woody and Jim were in 2008’s Taming of the Shrew. Several experienced newcomers join a core of CCT regulars in the cast. The title character will be played by James Perry, in his first show with CCT. He has performed and taught theatre in Washington, D.C. Lear’s daughters will be played by Jessica Moore of Northport, Lisa Lundgren of Rockport and Marie Merrifield of Rockland. Jim Dugan will portray the Earl of Gloucester and his sons will be played by Ivan Zizek of Lincolnville and Scott Anthony Smith of Belfast. Brad Fillion of Thomaston will play the Earl of Kent. The production has its own web site at www.camdenlear.com. There you will find full cast information, a complete plot summary, and a blog by the director and producer. There are also links to YouTube videos of rehearsals and other Lear productions.
