In an effort to assist the community of Maine people to rediscover the lost relationships with the wild, a group of fifteen Maine artists from all over the state and a conservation biologist are presenting the exhibit, “I Am Coyote”. The exhibit will focus on the coyote through the personal and creative expression of the artists themselves, with the goal of teaching about this native carnivore in ways that only art can bring.

The coyote is America’s native wild dog, found nowhere else in the world, and has survived on our continent for over a million years. No other animal has so captured the imagination and respect of our native peoples as did the coyote—he was the hero of countless myths, folktales and legends. However when the Europeans arrived on our continent, they brought along with them their fear and hatred of carnivores, and so proceeded to slaughter our native carnivores from the coast of Maine to California.

The exhibit is a collaborative effort between Conservation Biologist, Geri Vistein and a select group of artists. The initial inspiration came out of Geri’s experience of striving to find ways to educate our society regarding carnivores and the role they play in creating healthy ecosystems on our earth. Throughout her presentations, Geri found that groups expressed concern regarding human behavior toward the coyote and the need for humans to be educated in order to come to a place of respect and understanding. With this information, Geri pursued the idea of educating through art, knowing that art reaches people with diverse perspectives, often connecting us to new dimensions of understanding where our spoken the word cannot. Her goal was to search out artists who were capable of making these connections through their work.

The artists selected use diverse mediums and come from different areas of Maine, each with his or her own unique background and artistic experience. The artists bring with them deep reflection and a desire to contribute to our species’ understanding and respect for the other lives with whom we share our planet. They understand the powerful role that art plays in recreating perspectives in our society.
