(Portland, ME) Artist Michael Shaughnessy is developing a project to head cross country with a large, well-formed, yet wobbly ball of hay on his car. The project is titled “Wonderment: The Hay Ball’s Journey Across America”. The journey is scheduled to run from mid-August through mid-October 2012. First exhibited at the Tampa Museum of Art, the Hay Ball has become a bit of a fixture in Portland and has traveled through Boston and New Hampshire. While driving about it becomes a combination of performance art, sculpture and public art laced with humor and social interaction. In “Wonderment” the journey will touch on personal and cultural reconnection and reflection as it seeks to unexpectedly spread a bit of wonder and delight to an unsuspecting public across the back roads of America. Shaughnessy has developed a Kickstarter project in support of this effort, and along his travels he will be gathering images, texts and documentations that will be developed into various works including a video, book, blog and a body of photographs and prints. This project can be seen and supported by clicking here. For more information please visit www.shaughnessyart.com or find the Hay Ball Facebook. Michael Shaughnessy is a sculptor and has worked with hay for over 30 years. He has shown in museums nationally and teaches at the University of Southern Maine. Recently he was awarded the William E. and Helen E. Thon Jurors’ Prize at the 2011 Portland Museum of Art Biennial. He lives in Portland, Maine. |
