(Belfast, ME) At 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 19 (the day before we welcome the official start of spring), Left Bank Books in Belfast welcomes the public to a free talk by professional horticulturalists Marjorie Peronto and Reeser Manley who will discuss their latest book, “The Life in Your Garden: Gardening for Biodiversity.”

From the opening chapter, Peronto and Reeser explain why all gardeners should be concerned about the loss of biodiversity that our planet is experiencing and how to design and plant gardens that play a significant role in reversing that trend. “The Life in Your Garden” is a follow-up to the authors’ 2013 book, “The New England Gardener’s Year: A Month-by-Month Guide for Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Upstate New York.”

Whether you are gardening on a small, in-town plot or on a multi-acre country spread, “The Life in Your Garden” is an invaluable resource. The authors explain how different plantings — understory trees and shrubs, perennials, annuals, and fruits and vegetables — can help sustain native plant diversity and provide refuge for threatened species of insects and sanctuary for birds, amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals.

“The Life in Your Garden” is a must-read call to action for both novice and experienced gardeners. The authors present numerous examples of insect-garden interaction to demonstrate that a garden can and should be a stable, self-regulated ecosystem in which insect herbivores are held in check by their predators. Given our planet’s changing landscape, “The Life in Your Garden: Gardening for Biodiversity” is a priceless educational tool and resource for anyone who cares about his or her role as a steward of our planet.
