Pas de Deux and Solo Variations at Colby Print E-mail
Editor: Brenda Bonneville
Monday, 01 February 2010

Image

On February 12th at 7:30 pm in the Strider Theater.

(Waterville, ME) Boston Ballet principal dancers Kathleen Breen Combes and Yury Yanowsky, two of today's most exciting ballet artists, make their way to Colby just in time for a Valentine's Day program of pas de deux and solo work from the Romantic and modern ballet repertoire. Combes, recently hailed by the New York Times as "a ballerina of colossal scale and boldness," is among the country's foremost Balanchine interpreters, and Yanowski is widely admired for his passionate performance style in a variety of roles. Join these exciting young artists for an extraordinary evening of dance followed by an audience dialogue facilitated by Lynne Conner, chair of Colby's Theater and Dance Department and former dance critic for The Pittsburgh Press and WQED-FM.

For more information and to find out how to purchase tickets, please visit the Arts at Colby College website.

Photography Exhibit at the State House Print E-mail

The exhibit runs through February 12th.

(Augusta, ME) Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta, together with Literacy Volunteers of Maine, brings the touring documentary exhibition, "Faces of Literacy: Voices of Courage" to the State House Welcome Center in Augusta.

Organized by the state office of Literacy Volunteers of Maine (LV Maine), this exhibition (which will be on tour in Maine through 2011) is the first of its scale to showcase the issue of adult literacy in Maine. Fifteen percent of Maine’s population, or nearly 200,000 adults, struggles with reading which in turn affects family life, community involvement and our economy. Aimed to reduce the shame of low literacy by emphasizing personal achievements of learners and tutors, the exhibit illustrates how the Maine Literacy Volunteers Network offers life-changing solutions with free tutoring instruction. The exhibit also serves to open community dialogue about adult literacy, and encourages people who need help with reading, or who want to become tutors, to contact their local LV office.

The viewing hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm weekdays at 115 State House Station Drive in Augusta.

A Talk with Captain Brendan McAvoy at Left Bank Books on February 7, 2010 at 3:30 pm.

(Searsport, ME) Left Bank Books will open its second annual Winter Lyceum series with a fascinating talk by Chief Mate for the T/S State of Maine, Brendan McAvoy.

He will recount how in 2007, during the summer training voyage of the State of Maine, an unexpected health crisis affecting the ship's captain led McAvoy to an unexpected field promotion from 1st Officer to the command position of Master.

The vessel was underway on a voyage from the port of Gibraltar to Odessa, Ukraine and in the vicinity of the south coast of Sicily. Approximately 275 midshipmen and crew were on board with a mission to train at sea and visit three more ports before returning to Maine Maritime Academy's home port of Castine, Maine. It was time for the vessel's Chief Mate, Brendan McAvoy (1st Officer), to take command, establish emergency medical communications and plan a voyage deviation that would facilitate entering a port in which to disembark her stricken captain to medical facilities ashore.

Brendan has promised he will also share a few nautical titles that have inspired him over the years, and you can look forward to toasting a "Captain Courageous" who kept his wits under crisis at sea!
