(Augusta, ME) Winter sports enthusiasts will be treated to the best of Maine’s culture in the coming weeks as over 35,000 visitors, including 3,000 members of the European press, descend upon Aroostook County for the 2011 Biathlon World Cup in Presque Isle and Fort Kent for Olympic-level competition.

The Maine Arts Commission has worked with event organizers in an effort to provide the very best in entertainment and cultural offerings for spectators during their two-week stay in Maine. Festivities include live music, exhibitions of Maine art and much more.

“It is encouraging to see Maine’s communities recognizing their cultural assets and integrating them into their international events,” Said Kerstin Gilg of the Maine Arts Commission. “These events will bring winter guests to the downtowns and offer a good experience for both tourists and residents alike.”

In Presque Isle, the Maine Crafts Association has helped coordinate programming with the members of the Biathlon Committee, the Wintergreen Arts Center, the Aroostook Centre Mall, the Winterfest Downtown Festival and the Presque Isle Downtown Revitalization Committee.

Lynn Thompson, special projects coordinator for the Maine Crafts Association, explained the significance of including Maine’s artisans into the Biathlon World Cup proceedings by noting, “This event will allow visitors from Europe and further afield to experience Maine’s rich and historic culture through its artistic offerings. Maine, after all, is a state of artists and throughout time visitors have purchased our art as a reminder of their time here.”

In Presque Isle, support from the Maine Arts Commission will allow artisans Thom Cote, Brian Theriault and Laney Lloyd to bring Maine’s traditions alive though demonstrations of carving, traditional snowshoe making and weaving. The funding will also support performing artists as they round out existing offerings for the February 4th and 5th festivities.

In Fort Kent, the events will run for five days beginning on February 9th. The 10th Mountain Ski Club has been given funding to support artists at the Lions Pavilion, the University at Fort Kent, the venue at Lonesome Pines, the area high school and the Ice Castle venue.

“We are excited to show the world what our region has to offer,” said George Dumond, Chief of Festival and Hosting for Fort Kent Biathlon World Cup. “Not only will the world be watching, but visitors form countries all over the world will be here, in Aroostook County, participating as either athletes or spectators. We have the opportunity to show off the culture of Maine and highlight what makes our part of the state so special. That includes our world class sport facilities, abundant natural beauty, and cultural heritage as well as our artists, musicians, and creative businesses.”

Support from the Maine Arts Commission will allow for extended programming of artists like Pete Kilpatrick and Dark Hollow Bottling Company. It will also bring The Acadian Singers and local singing sensation Melanie Saucier to the festival to perform traditional songs associated with the St. John Valley. The funds will also help traditional arts exhibitions by local artists involved in weaving, basket making, snowshoe making, rug hooking, wood sculpting, ploys (buckwheat pancakes) and more.

At the Grand in Ellsworth on Friday, February 11th at 7:30 pm.

(Ellsworth, ME) Born in 1936 in Jamaica, Pete was still a child when his family moved to a small town outside of Austin, Texas. His religious upbringing introduced him to gospel music, but eventually he heeded the call of the blues. Pete got his start playing bass and singing with Henry “Blues Boy” Hubbard and the Jets. Along the way, he served as mentor to a young W.C. Clark, now a Black Top artist who is widely regarded as a patriarch of the Austin scene. Pete came to Phoenix in the early sixties. His first gigs here were with the late great Duke Draper, a fine singer and keyboardist in his own right. Pete’s next musical move was to join Jimmy Knight and His Knights of Rhythm.

During the late 1970’s, Pete served as the original vocalist for Drivin’ Wheel. Since then, Pete has pretty much fronted his own groups, and the list of graduates from his school of bluesology reads like a Who’s Who of respected musicians. Pete’s latest version of the Blues Sevilles consisted of Moe Denham on vocals and keyboards, guitarist Kirk Hawley, bassist Kati Ingino and drummer Alvieto Robinson.

In 1998, Pete moved to Maine because, he said, they “have great fishing there…” Don’t miss this classic blues concert, sponsored by WERU… one night only at The Grand!

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. For more information, please visit the Grand website.

On Wednesday, February 16th 7:30 pm at the Merrill Auditorium.

(Portland, ME) The performance is presented in collaboration with the Bates Dance Festival. Prized for dexterity, musicality and performance instincts, Doug Varone and Dancers is recognized as one of America’s leading dance companies. The evening opens with the company’s triumphant work, Lux, and concludes with Chapters from a Broken Novel, a new work co-commissioned by Ovations along with Bates Dance Festival. Created from a collection of hundreds of phrases, snippets of conversations, found quotes and vivid images gathered together in the pages of Varone’s journal — these “chapters” revel in a multiplicity of meanings that live between the lines. From the smallest gesture to full-throttle bursts of movement, Varone’s work can literally take your breath away.

For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit the Portland Ovations website.

Performance is at 7:30 pm on February 12th at Johnson Hall.

(Gardiner, ME) Two Spotlight Award nominations, designation as a “River Rising Star” by Boston’s largest independent commercial radio station, a half-hour live feature on NHPR’s acclaimed “Front Porch” radio series, and radio play on more than 150 stations around the country and the world all attest to infectiousness of this “twang”, and the ability of this music to reach beyond the band’s home in the Northeast’s Seacoast region.

Formed in 2005 by Dave Hunter (lead vocals, guitars), The Molenes consist of Andrew Russell (bass, vocals), Bruce Derr (pedal-steel guitar), and Zach Field (drums).
Their acclaimed full-length releases to date include 2006′s This Car is Big and 2008′s Songs of Sin and Redemption. The Molenes’ hotly-anticipated third album, Good Times Comin’, was released September 28, 2010, and is already climbing high into the FAR (American Roots) and Americana Music Association radio charts.

For more information, please visit the Johnson Hall website.
