SPACE Gallery Screens Linotype: The Film Print E-mail
Editor: Brenda Bonneville

(Portland, ME) Screening takes place on Tuesday, April 24th. Linotype: The Film is a feature-length documentary centered around the Linotype type casting machine. Called the "Eighth Wonder of the World" by Thomas Edison, it revolutionized printing and society. The film tells the charming and emotional story of the people connected to the Linotype and how it impacted the world.

The Linotype completely transformed the communication of information similarly to how the internet is now changing communication again. Although these machines were revolutionary, technology began to supersede the Linotype and they were scrapped and melted-down by the thousands. Today, very few machines are still in existence.

The highly-skilled operators of the Linotype are in a battle against time. If their skills are not passed along to a new generation of operators, the machine will die completely. There is a small group of former operators that want to save the Linotype from the scrap yard, but some see this as a fruitless endeavor.

Doors open at 7:00 and the film starts at 7:30 pm. This movie is appropriate for all ages. For more information, please visit www.space538.org.

(Waterville, ME) Performed by the Colby Jazz Band on Saturday, April 14th 7:30 pm in the Given Auditorium. Passover and its connection to the 12th Street Detroit riots of 1967 inspired the hit tune “Soul Man.” From New Orleans soul we’ll trace the effects through Motown, Memphis, and Chicago to psychedelic soul and its transformation to funk and Latin funk. Soul music from Isaac Hayes; Earth, Wind, and Fire; Marvin Gaye; Booker T.; the MGs; and Sly and the Family Stone. Tunes will include “Some Skunk Funk,” “Chameleon,” “Cantaloupe Island,” “Car Wash,” and “Funky Cha Cha.” Our small groups playing standards, originals, and Super Sax will rock the house.
