2nd Annual Dead Poets Remembrance Day Print E-mail

(Portland, ME) At Mayo Street Arts on Thursday, October 6th at 7:00 pm. Readings and Music celebrating Celia Thaxter, Elizabeth Akers Allen, Denise Levertov and other Maine poets. Join Portland's Mayo Street Artswe to celebrate the poetry of several of the Unsung Women Poets of Maine.

Maine has a rich tradition of women poets who have sung from these shores and woods. While many people know the names of Edna St. Vincent Millay, May Sarton, Louise Bogan and Elizabeth Bishop, there remain many Maine women from the past whose voices deserve to be brought back from the dead, as it were. This event has been made possible by the kind sponsorship of the Maine Women Writers Collection and the cooperation of the Stonecoast MFA Program at USM.

For more information, please visit the Mayo Street Arts website.

(Orono, ME) Performed by the National Broadway Tour on Sunday, October 9th at 7:00 pm. This musical is the standard by which all other are measured. Based on Shaw's play and Pascal's movie "Pygmalion," with book, music and lyrics by Lerner and Loewe, My Fair Lady is triumphant. With songs including "Wouldn't It By Loverly?" "With a Little Bit of Luck, "The Rain in Spain," "On the Street Where You Live," "I've Grown Accustomed to her Face," it's no wonder everyone - not just Henry Higgins - falls in love with Eliza Doolittle.

Handmade Nation at the Grand in Ellsworth Print E-mail

(Ellsworth, ME) Two screenings: Friday, October 14 at 7:30pm and Saturday, October 15 at 7:00 pm. The film is in conjunction with the annual Bead, Jewelry & Fiber show on October 14 and 15. Handmade Nation is a documentary film about the modern D.I.Y. crafting community directed by one of its own – Faythe Levine (founder of Milwaukee’s independent craft fair Art vs. Craft as well as co-owner and curator of Paper Boat Boutique & Gallery).

Levine traveled almost 20,000 miles and interviewed countless craftsters and crafty business owners across the United States to document the seemingly all-encompassing crafting community. There has been significant growth in the D.I.Y. crafting movement during the last decade, primarily because of the crafters’ willingness to share ideas and encourage each other by networking on the internet and at independent marketplaces (boutiques, galleries, craft fairs, fashion shows, etc.).

All participants to the Bead, Jewelry & Fiber show can present their ticket stub at the Grand box office to receive a $2.00 discount for movie admission. For more information, please visit the Grand website.

(Lewiston, ME) On Friday, October 14th at 8:00 pm. The New York Funk Exchange was born in the fall of 2007. The NYFE hails from Brooklyn, NY and has been performing their original music live in the North East since that time. The multi-talented members of NYFE combine the roots of funk, soul, R&B, and jazz with their own unique arrangements and dynamic rhythms.

This innovative sound is a result of the band’s skillful song writing abilities and the many influences they incorporate into their music. Each member is a master at their instrument, but all possess the virtue of harmony when playing together. Each member of the NYFE has a deep respect and enthusiasm for music and its ongoing creative process. Their individual passion and the powerful group energy fuels the excitement that can be found during every live performance, as well as their studio recordings. They are on a collective journey to continuously experience more in every realm of music, from theory to performance.

For more information, please visit the Franco-American Heritage Center website.
