(Belfast, ME) Left Bank Books is delighted to welcome long-time food historian and freelance food writer Sandra Oliver for a signing of her new book Maine Home Cooking on Saturday, September 15th at 2:00 pm. Oliver is well known for her books Saltwater Foodways, The Food of Colonial and Federal American, and Giving Thanks. As well she has written a regular weekend column in The Bangor Daily News called “Taste Buds.” She lives on Islesboro where she gardens, preserves, cooks and teaches sustainable ways of life, so she is well qualified to share her wisdom and useful advice on preparing delicious meals from Maine’s broad culinary heritage. The newest book is a compendium of 175 delicious, no-nonsense recipes, with handsome illustrations-- from classic Downeast dishes like salmon loaf and venison chili, Whoopie Pies and Needhams, to more modern fare like shrimp pesto roll and Cowboy Caviar. Oliver has a practical approach to cooking that is refreshing and reassuring. As she puts it, “I never think of myself as a chef: to be a chef means you are the boss in the kitchen, with someone to do what you say, and I don’t know about you, but there are only cats in my kitchen, and they don’t take orders.” This is your chance to meet a writer with deep and authentic knowledge of Maine dishes and to find out just what is “Rinktumdiddy” or Gamaldag’s Peparkakor.” The public is warmly invited to this author event. To reserve a copy of the book or for more information, call 207-338-9009. Left Bank Books is located in the Opera House building at 109 Church Street in Belfast. |
