(Belfast, ME) In conjunction with the War on Peace exhibit, West Point graduate, Iraq War vet, and peace leader Paul Chappell will speak at Waterfall Arts in Belfast on Friday, October 26 beginning at 7:00 pm. Chappell was stationed in Baghdad during his military service, leaving the Army with the rank of captain. He is the author of three books: The End of War, Will War Ever End, and Peaceful Revolution. He was named Peacemaker of the Year by the Independent Booksellers Association and was the subject of an April 2011 Sun Magazine interview. He's also appeared on Book TV and been interviewed by Tavis Smiley, among others. While he is in Maine, Chappell will also speak at UMO on October 25th at 4:00 pm and at UMaine Farmington on October 26th at 11:30 am. Chappell is a mixed-race (half Korean, a quarter each Black and White) native of Alabama who entered West Point believing war is an effective means of resolving conflict; he left Iraq convinced that it is not. He now tours the country speaking out about better ways to resolve conflict and keep our country safe. The War on Peace exhibit at Waterfall Arts features the work of Maine artists Robert Shetterly and Alan Magee along with photographs by Harlan Crichton of Iraq/Afghanistan veterans. The exhibit includes Shetterly’s portrait of Chappell along with those of several other soldiers and peace activists in his series, Americans Who Tell the Truth. Maine master artist Alan Magee’s work in the show deals with the corporal effects of war and the intentions of those who profit from conflict. Chappell currently serves as the Peace Leadership Director of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, a consultant to the UN working for the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons. The Dalai Lama says of NAPF: “The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation has been…a consistent voice in ending the nuclear weapons threat to humanity and all life." He will hold a workshop on peace activism at Waterfall Arts on Saturday, October 27, open to those who attended one of his talks in Maine. For more information, contact Tammy Scully at WPMaine@gmail.com. The War on Peace exhibit is sponsored by Yo Mama’s Home, City Drawers and WERU. Waterfall Arts is located at 256 High Street in Belfast. Gallery hours through November 21st are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
