ALAN VLACH (Trenton, ME)


Alan VlachAlan Vlach’s works and interests include a deep commitment to the traditional darkroom while fully embracing new technologies. He has recently started working extensively with the digital enlarged negative process and digital printmaking media.

His interest in black-and white photography started in 1970 with a 35mm SLR. In 1999 he moved up to a 4x5 view camera and began a formal study of the medium with George DeWolfe. Since then, he has attended workshops with Marilyn Bridges, George Tice, Tillman Crane, Brenton Hamilton, Mark Nelson and Lewis Kemper. In 2004 - 2005 he attended courses in the Certificate Program at Rockport College. He has worked as a teaching assistant in 2006 and 2007 and has taught at the Maine Media Workshops in 2007 and 2008.

Other primary influences on his work are Edward and Brett Weston, Paul Caponigro, Frederick Sommer, John Sexton and Aaron Siskind.
