ANNA SHAW (Newcastle, ME)

Anna ShawVisiting new places evokes many reactions, and for the photographer, they usually include wanting to record as many parts of the new experience as possible. With the advent of digital photography, there is an enormous collection of images being put up on every available space. Many are excellent documents of any given area.

The challenge, then, is to try to create images which transcend the document and give a greater sense of the spirit of place. This was done more often with large-format film photography, which required much slower action, and greater "pre-visualization", (to borrow Ansel Adams' phrase). In digital work, pre-visualization involves having a sense of what the computer can do as well as the place.
