LISA B. MARTIN (MONROE, ME)
The works selected are part of a larger visual exploration into our perceived relationship to nature. We tend to approach this relationship from a Cartesian viewpoint-- one that posits us as distinctly separate observers from our surrounding environment. Additionally, it seems lately that our intimate link with this animate earth is compromised and experienced more as a simulacrum, primarily stemming from our use of modern technologies. By employing the language of symbolism, metaphor, irony, and humor, the goal of the work is to stimulate a remembering of this intimate connection, in hopes of relinquishing the boundary between our perceiving selves and the natural world.
